Hailing from Vermont’s Champlain Islands, 22-year-old photographer Sarah Kjelleren is now based out of Brooklyn, not far from where we met to shoot this issue’s cover with Ally Love. Inspired by the work of famed photographers such as Cass Bird, Annie Leibovitz, and Hedi Slimane, Kjelleren shoots mostly portraits and editorials. The shadowy streets of New York City create a dreamlike backdrop for many of her shoots, rife with chain-link fences and blurred streetlights. Through a seemingly unstoppable combination of flawless lighting and fresh, youthful subjects, Kjelleren captures still imagery that is impossibly alive.

 What brought you to New York? How long have you been here?

I've been in New York now for soon to be four years. I originally was inspired by the art and photography that was coming out of NYC, and knew that I had to be a part of it. I felt as if I was drawn to the city - coming from a very rural town in Vermont I had never experienced anything like it, and without even visiting I applied for school and packed my bags. I was able to visit once after acceptance at FIT, which reassured my feeling of this internal pull.  Continue Reading....
