Progressing from classic realism to abstraction, one artist that continues to spark intrigue with his intense portraits is Ryan Hewett. Once described as one of South Africa’s most distinguished artists, the majority of Hewett’s themes are based on self. Known for his dramatically textured and three-dimensional surface Hewitt’s paintings operate as a function that deeply connects with viewers on his personal articulation of self-examination. Most notable for using flesh tones, I find it highly impressive that the artist applies paint without a preliminary sketch, working swiftly before the oils dry.

Through a combination of detailing, edging, scraping off layers, and blending, the hues of his paintings are rich in texture expressing Hewett’s passion for raw emotion and intricacy. Although the artist doesn’t use physical subjects to construct a realistic depiction his recent collection focused on the likeness of noted figures from the present and the past sparking tension and intrigue with the consistency of his work. Ryan Hewett’s daring persona incorporated in his stunning visuals leave an impact of definite perception.
